Insight Maker/Types of Models

Insight Maker is web based multi-user modeling and simulation environment which enables distributed virtual collaboration.

Insight Maker is web based multi-user modeling and simulation environment which enables distributed virtual collaboration.

While Insight Maker was originally intended to be a simulation environment is was quickly discovered there were a variety of different types of models that could be readily supported within the environment.
Rich pictures simply present a set of relations between entities typically represented as pictures. All primitives of Insight Maker can be used as elements of a rich picture as images can be attached though the picture element and text are the ones most often used. Rich pictures are typically easiest to construct as there are no conventions associated with them. Just attempt to convey your understanding.
Causal Loop Diagrams have a set of conventions to indicate whether influences are positive or negative with loops labeled as reinforcing or balancing. The typical convention is to use + or S for positive influences and - or O for negative influences though other contentions are encountered as blue for positive and red for negative. Typically the elements of a causal loop diagram are simply text though may be enhanced with images as in this example.
Stock & Flow diagrams have very explicit rules for their construction as they are intended to serve as a basis for a computer simulation. Associated with each relation is a formula that explicitly defines the relationship and is used to calculate values during the simulation.
Mind Maps are similar to rich pictures and meant to convey a set of conceptual relations. Mind maps are typically used to ferret out continually refined levels of concept details.
Dialogue maps are an approach to conducting a structured conversation which begins with a question. For a question there are multiple thoughts. For each thought there may be pro, con or question thoughts which provide additional options, clarification, or detail.
Agent Based simulations differ from continuous simulations in they are meant to keep track of one or more states for the agents in the simulation.
Systemigrams, invented by Saucer and Boardman, represented a structured translation of the words and meanings pertaining to piece of structured writing and captures a strategic intent.
Believe it or not, it's really true! Insight Maker is completely FREE. Not free for a reduced capability. Just plain FREE! The developer simply believes this is a capability that needs to exist for the world to use. And I agree, which is why I support the effort.
