grassland model
Strand
I recreated the grassland model from Menge et al. (2009) in InsightMaker and ran it for 100 years. The model includes three state variables: available soil nitrogen, biomass nitrogen, and detritus nitrogen. The main fluxes are abiotic input, plant uptake, biomass turnover, mineralization, available nitrogen loss, and organic nitrogen loss. The results make sense because available nitrogen remains low and adjusts quickly, biomass nitrogen stays near its expected equilibrium, and detritus nitrogen is much larger and changes more slowly. This matches the paper’s idea that nutrient pools operate on different timescales.
