Relationship between youth population in Bourke with Community and Police

This model represents the impacts that community groups, external influences and police presence have on the number of engaged youth, disengaged youth and criminal activity in Bourke.

Bourke has a total population of 2,634 with 302 people aged 10 – 19 (ABS, 2016). It is a remote town located in north-west NSW.

Engaged Youth

When it comes to engaged youth the community programs held in Bourke and the level of police presence impacts on the number of engaged youth. An increase in community programs and increase in police presence has a positive effect and increases the number of engaged youth. Alternatively a decrease in community programs or police presence has a negative affect and decreases the number of engaged youth.

Employment

Employment is directly influences by the number of engaged youth and the level of education. An increase in engagement and education leads to an increase in employment and a decrease in engagement leads to a decrease in employment.

Disengaged Youth

Similarly when it comes to disengaged youth the community programs held in Bourke and external influences such as domestic violence, mental health, negative relationships and lack of education impacts on the number of disengaged youth. An increase in these negative external negative influences or a decrease in community programs has a negative effect and increases the number of disengaged youth. Alternatively a decrease in the negative external influences or an increase in community programs has a positive effect and decreases the number of engaged youth.

Criminal Activity

Criminal activity is impacted by the number of disengaged youth and the level of police presence. An increase in police presence decreases the level of criminal activity and a decrease in police presence increases the level of criminal activity. Following criminal activity and conviction and sentencing, the youth in Bourke may then change and be engaged (based on their conviction and community programs), or they may remain disengaged and potentially go through the justice system again as a repeat offenders.

Variables:

Community Programs: the number of community programs may increase or decrease depending on funding, engagement and community involvement.

Police presence: police presence will vary depending on the crime levels and funding available
