Causal Loop Diagram Exercise - PART 2

For last week's Causal Loop Diagramming assignment (Part 1), Construct the model using the rules of causal loop diagramming.  Use InsightMaker to build the model.

Your submission should be the link to your Insight Maker model.

Using the reading assignment from El-Taliawi and Hartley on using a SSM for COVID-19 follow the steps for SSM to include:

1)  Describe the Problem (unstructured).

2)  Develop a Root Definition for the COVID-19 problem space by identifying the three elements:  what, how, why.   A System to do X, by (means of) Y, in order to achieve Z.

X - What the system does

Y -  How it does it

Z - Why is it being done

(see slide 33 in the Systems Thinking Workshop reading)

3)  Identify the Perspectives (CATWOE)

4)  Develop a basic Systemigram / Rich Picture to tell the story.

Submit your assignment as a Word document or PDF that addresses #1-4.  You can use InsightMaker to create your systemigram or use the Systemitool which you can access at SERC hereLinks to an external site.

If you use InsightMaker, try presenting your results as a Story using the Storytelling capabilityLinks to an external site..

You will have TWO WEEKS to complete this assignment (due on March 7th).

BONUS:  For Extra Credit, develop a model in Insight Maker for your archetype.

This InsightMaker diagram shows the Limit to growth archetype. The solid lines represent the standard "Limit to Success" diagram. The dash lines represent the proposed solution describe in assignment question number 3.

For the next stage of your Final Project, the team should perform a bit more background research.  Each team member should select a key area related to the selected Problem space.  For their selected problem area, team members are to review 2-3 sources of information to find out more about the background for those aspects of the problem space.  Areas could differ by stakeholder / world views or could also represent specific concerns for the problem space.

Each team member shall write a statement / narrative around their area of the problem space based on what they learned in their review of the literature.  The team shall then get together and write a joint statement / narrative that captures the core issues surrounding the problem space.  Rich pictures developed either by hand or in Insight Maker should begin to become part of the project - at least one of the team member's areas should include a picture for this assignment - but more is better.

For submission:

  1. List of references consulted by the team (in APA format).
  2. Individual team member narratives for their area of evaluation.
  3. The team's joint statement / narrative capturing the core issues for the overall problem space.
  4. Initial rich pictures developed to represent the narratives developed.

Develop your submission in MS Word and submit the Word File for credit.

Don't forget the supplemental reading discussed here.  This will provide a lot of insight into the framework for the overall assignment.

You now have the basics for defining your Action Model / Systemigram.

  1. Gather all the information you have so far:  PQR, CATWOE and the Root Definition.
  2. Write down three groups of activities:
    1. Things that concern what is being transformed (where you are starting).
    2. Activities that do the actual transforming.
    3. Activities dealing with the transformed entity
  3. Connect the activities with arrows that indicate the dependencies.
  4. For the SSM approach, add the three monitoring and control activities like that shown here (from the SSM reading)
