In E. coli wurden drei Regulatoren in den genetischen Code eingebaut. Diese Proteine stehen durch einen hemmenden Repressionszyklus miteinander in Wechselwirkung:

A hemmt B -- B hemmt C -- C hemmt A

Das Protein C wirkt zudem als Aktivator  für das grün fluoreszierende Protein GFP. 

In diesem Experiment ist Protein A anfänglich in der Zelle vorhanden, während die Konzentrationen von B und C Null sind.
