Soil-Science Models

These models and simulations have been tagged “Soil-Science”.

The numbers for plant diversity represent the number of species planted in a field with 1 representing a monocropping system and 3 representing a three sisters system. The model demonstrates an increase in both microbial biomass and functional diversity when more crops are grown simultaneously.

Measurements of Microbial Biomass are in (mgCkg soil)
Functional Diversity measurements are in percent increase.

These hypothetical values are based on Microbial biomass results from a paper by Yan Mei Sun comparing an intercropped cereal/legume system to a monocrop system. We thought the values found in this experiment would be similar to those found in our experiment due to its similarity to ours. Similarly the increase shown in functional diversity is roughly based on the same papers analysis of DNA and bacterial populations. However, we realized that functional diversity is hard to quantify with a simple number in our model making the information gained from the model less useful.
