The global nitrogen cycle involves the movement of nitrogen through the atmosphere, land, and oceans. Nitrogen is fixed into usable forms through biological processes, accumulating in soils, surface oceans, and rivers. Denitrification returns nitrogen to the atmosphere, while some is stored in sediments and rocks, slowly released through weathering.

A 'leaky bucket' soil moisture model, based on Guswa et al. (2002). Rain falls as discrete events. The mean depth and frequency of rainfall events are determined by total monthly rainfall and number of rain days. A portion of the rainfall is intercepted by vegetation and evaporates before reaching the soil. The remaining rainfall (throughflow) either infiltrates the soil or, if the soil has insufficient capacity, runs off immediately. Soil water exceeding the field capacity is lost by sub-surface leakage, at a rate determined by the degree of soil saturation. Degree of soil saturation also limits rates of soil evaporation and vegetation transpiration. The partitioning between evaporation and transpiration is influenced by fractional area covered by vegetation.

STEM is a modified implementation of Hartig et al.'s (2019) Very Simple Ecosystem Model (VSEM). The vegetation part of the model has two stocks of biomass carbon (C): aboveground C and belowground C.  The soil part of the model has a single stock of soil organic C. Carbon flows into the biomass C stocks via net primary productivity (NPP). Carbon flows out of these stocks and into the soil organic C stock via the loss of aboveground/belowground C through senescence (i.e., abscission of dead leaves and roots). SOC loss is due to heterotrophic respiration of the soil organic matter.

This is a partial implementation of the 'Very Simple Ecosystem Model' (VSEM) from R package BayesianTools (Hartig et al. 2019). It simulates Gross and Net Primary Productivity based on a simple light-use efficiency model. Daily PAR values were generated in R using the BayesianTools function "VSEMcreatePAR()".

This is based on absolutely nothing.
Simulate weird little dots that must link to each other at semiregular intervals or  D I E.

Rules of the simulation:
- When Idle, creatures will randomly move around and wiggle in place.
- Roughly every fifteen seconds (with a bit of randomness) the agents will flip from Idle to Searching.
- When Searching, creatures attempt to reach the nearest Searching or Connected creature. Once they get within five units, they will latch onto them and become Connected.
- If a Searching creature doesn't reach another creature in time, they are Dead.
- Connected creatures will move away from all linked creatures until they are twenty units away from every linked creature, after which they will disconnect from all linked creatures and become Idle.
- Cycle repeats until simulation ends or every creature is dead.
