The urban heat island (UHI) effect describes the local increase of surface and air temperatures in cities compared to their surroundings. This effect is due to complex factors, mostly related to the transfer of solar energy through a city. Dense urban developments absorb and retain more heat than green spaces. Tall buildings restrict the heat transfer out of the city. This effect is related to SGD 11, which focuses on making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
